Accessibility
What this site commits to, how it is checked, and how to tell us when it falls short.
Last updated 2026-08-24
Our commitment
This site targets the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. That standard is backward compatible with WCAG 2.1 AA, which is the benchmark referenced by United States courts and by the Department of Justice.
How it is checked
Accessibility is checked automatically on every proposed change, before it can reach this site. The audit runs against every page of the built site, and a failure stops the change from shipping. Each item below is a check that runs, not an intention.
- Every page is audited against WCAG 2.2 AA with axe-core. Any violation it can detect fails the build.
- Every image must carry descriptive alternative text. A missing description fails the build outright, before the audit even runs.
- Colour contrast is checked twice: once on the palette itself, and once on the rendered page, where the real foreground and background are measured.
- Keyboard focus is checked by tabbing through each page and confirming that every control reached shows a visible focus indicator.
- Filter controls are checked to announce their state through
aria-pressed, and to actually change what is shown rather than only appearing to. - Video is checked to never play automatically, to always expose controls, and to load no data until someone asks for it.
- Reduced motion is checked by loading the site as a visitor who requests it, confirming nothing animates and that no content is left invisible.
- Every internal link and in-page anchor is checked to resolve.
Known limits
Automated checks catch a minority of accessibility problems. They cannot tell whether an image description is accurate, whether a heading structure makes sense, or whether a page is usable with a screen reader in practice. The checks above prove that alternative text exists; only a person can tell you it is true.
This site has not yet been tested with a screen reader by someone who uses one. Where it falls short, we would rather hear it than not.
